Australian Jailed in China on Murky Charges

on Sunday, 15 Jul 2012. Posted in Events

It’s a braver woman or man than me who would create a profitable business in China and risk laying yourself open to the Chinese system.  The Australian government doesn’t seem too convinced by the handling of these cases either.

"I think there is a lot of hope.  Especially when I talk to younger people, it seems like there is a really big and kind of new general awareness in the minds of many people.  But at the same time I see a lot of people that seems like zombies to me."

Refugees

Refugees

In 1951, in the wake of World War II,  the United Nations created the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. In Article 1A they defined a refugee as “A person who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it.”

In addition, Article 14(1) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states “Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.”

Put simply, a refugee is a person forced to flee their home country for their own safety and to escape persecution due to their race, religion, nationality, politics or social grouping. In the future, this definition may include climatic and environmental refugees, fleeing the effects of climate change but for now, most refugees are fleeing civil war, foreign invasion or violations of human rights.

The Financial Crisis

The Financial Crisis

Many international economists consider the Global Financial Crisis (as we call it down here in Australia) to be the worst recession since the famous ‘Great Depression’ of the 1930s. The crisis started in the USA with the bursting of the housing ‘bubble’.  Property had reached an unrealistically high value, peaking in 2007, then suddenly nose-dived, causing the value of US securities linked to property to plummet.  Large financial institutions, key businesses and industries collapsed and banks in the US and elsewhere had to be bailed out by the government. Many banks foreclosed on mortgages and homeowners and tenants faced eviction. Consumer wealth is estimated to have declined by trillions of US dollars and the decline in international economic activity led to severe global recession and ‘economic shock’ that effected national economies worldwide, from the USA to the UK and Ireland, from France and Germany, from Iceland and Greece to developing countries like Kenya.

Our Film Tackles

on Tuesday, 30 Oct 2012. Posted in Issues

Our film tackles many issues in the world today and it arrives at a number of conclusions about America, the world and ourselves. However one overriding idea that we come to face at the end of our film is the plight of children in the world and how important it is that we provide a safe and secure life for our children so that they can grow up and create a safer and saner society for themselves and future generations. This is a simple truth. Almost cliche but if most of us seriously considered this it would make a huge difference in the world. One only has to look at some of the key issues of today and find some horrifying facts about children in poverty.

You are a blessing for this world man!

"I just wanted to tell you that your film really touched me, especially the scenes in Africa....your film really inspired me and increased my wish to study medicine even more than before, so that I can help those people in a certain way!  Your father was right when he said in the film that you didn't fail by not interviewing the president of the US.  The mass of people who watched your film can achieve even more than one single man who is influenced too much by different parties."
